The relationship between the Clovis chronological horizon and earlier populations in the Americas remains an active research question.

Researchers continue to examine the origins of Clovis technology, relationships with earlier populations, regional variation, mobility, subsistence, and the transition after the classic interval.

Supporting citation for public claim

The term Clovis identifies an archaeological complex rather than a single demonstrated ethnic identity.

Clovis evidence does not by itself prove first arrival, European origin, one ethnic identity, a lost civilization, or destruction by a cosmic impact.

The end of the Clovis technocomplex is not evidence by itself of population extinction or comet causation.

Answer / theory: The evidence does not support a simple wipeout. Clovis technology changed into later regional traditions, and people continued in North America. What supports it: Clovis timing overlaps broadly with major environmental change. What is weak or disputed: A direct comet-caused population collapse is not demonstrated. Evidence level: Weak Evidence.

Limiting / critical citation for public claim

Firestone et al. proposed a 12.9 ka extraterrestrial event contributing to Younger Dryas cooling and megafaunal extinctions; independent testing and the 2023 review do not establish that it ended Clovis or caused the combined outcomes.

The evidence does not automatically support broader causal, technological, transmission, or literalizing claims beyond the cited record.

Limiting / critical citation for public claim

The listed archaeological chronology and critical review do not support a simple comet-caused wipeout of Clovis-associated populations.

The evidence does not automatically support broader causal, technological, transmission, or literalizing claims beyond the cited record.
